Parliamentarians for a Fossil-Free Future Delegation Heads to COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan

Advocates for Urgent Fossil Fuel Phase-Out and Climate Action

The Parliamentarians for a Fossil-Free Future is sending a diverse delegation of lawmakers to the United Nations Climate Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The delegation will emphasize the need for immediate and significant fossil fuel phase-out policies, equitable climate finance, and a just transition toward renewable energy, in alignment with the Paris Agreement goals.

The delegation will host discussions and participate in panels addressing key climate challenges. Members will bring perspectives from both global north and south, highlighting best practices, innovative legislation, and cooperative frameworks that reinforce cross-border commitments to reducing fossil-fuel dependency.

The Parliamentarians for a Fossil Free Future has long championed legislative cooperation across borders. With a commitment to advancing climate justice, the delegation will spotlight initiatives like the Global Legislators’ Call Against LNG Expansion and stress the urgency of redirecting resources toward renewable energy and climate adaptation projects. The aim is to build an actionable path that transcends political shifts and strengthens cross-national parliamentary cooperation.

“Parliamentarians play a unique role in advancing policies that meet climate goals," said Canada Senator Rosa Galvez. "Our delegation is focused on sharing and adopting best practices that drive down emissions, ensure accountability, and foster an inclusive transition that prioritizes the most vulnerable communities."

“Aligning with the Paris Agreement requires that countries build on the COP28 agreement to transition away from fossil fuels, triple up renewables, and double down on energy efficiency. Despite the odds, parliamentarians will keep pushing governments, especially those of the Global North, toward the goal of a full, fast, fair, and funded fossil fuel phaseout,” according to Uganda Member of Parliament (MP) Biyika Lawrence Songa.

“The new climate finance goal must sufficiently address energy, just transition and other mitigation needs, as well as those for adaptation and loss and damage. COP29 must also mark the beginning of the submission of ambitious and actionable national climate plans,” Nepal MP Anjan Shakya added. “The mountain agenda must also be addressed genuinely. It is the main reason for the formation of glaciers, rivers, oceans. It plays a crucial role in regulating the climate and ecosystem of the world. It is melting due to the rise of temperature in the atmosphere and burst glaciers of the Himalayas and tend to flood downstream.”

Among the events that the network is organizing is a November 16 discussion with United States Senator Ed Markey on how President Donald Trump’s re-election, among other shifts, may impact global climate action, international cooperation, and the role of the US as a climate leader.
