A group of global legislators has urged the US government to immediately halt the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG), in a letter released during the first day of the Climate Week NYC.

The text, directed at US President Joe Biden and US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, was penned by over 100 legislators who joined the Parliamentarians for a Fossil-Free Future, a network that counts over 800 legislators from 95 countries.

The initiative was led by German MP Lisa Badum and US Senator Edward Markey, setting the stage towards the call for an immediate moratorium on new LNG infrastructure worldwide ahead of the COP29 UN climate summit.

Furthermore, members of the Parliamentarians’ network from Brazil, Colombia, Canada, Bolivia, and Tanzania announced on Monday that they plan to officially ask nine Amazonian countries to declare the rainforest a fossil-fuel-free area at COP30, due to be held in Belem, Brazil in 2025.

Dinah Fuentesfina, coordinator of the network, told Carbon Pulse she is confident that Brazil will commit to the target, as well as Colombia and other countries.

In June, the network's Global Inquiry Committee prepared a series of questions, investigating the progress of the fossil fuel phaseout and exploring opportunities to accelerate a phase in of renewable energy systems in a just and equitable manner.
