Press briefing: UN Summit of the Future Outcomes

The press briefing, to be held on 23 September 2024 at the Consulate of Colombia in New York, will feature parliamentarians reacting to the outcomes of the UN Summit of the Future and discussing the urgent issues on energy transition that will be tackled in the upcoming UN conferences on climate change and biodiversity in Azerbaijan (COP29) and Colombia (COP16), respectively.

The event aims to underscore the pivotal role of parliamentarians in driving the global fossil-free agenda, ensuring that both national and international efforts are aligned to achieve a just and equitable transition away from fossil fuels.

SPEAKERS

1. Bolivia Senator Cecilia Requena

Hon. Cecilia Requena is a Senator in  the Plurinational Legislative Assembly of Bolivia, where she presides over the Committee on Land and Territory, Natural Resources and the Environment. She also serves as the Secretary of the Committee on Environment, Biodiversity, Amazon, Protected Areas and Climate Change. She speaks English, Spanish, and German.

2. Brazil MP Célia Xakriabá

Hon. Célia Xakriabá is a Federal Deputy of the Brazilian Congress. She was elected as the first indigenous deputy in Minas Gerais. She is the former president and now vice-president of the Amazon and Native and Traditional Peoples Commission. She has historically fought for the defense of the territory and of the indigenous peoples of Brazil for the protection of the environment. She speaks Portuguese and has an English translator.

3. Canada Senator Rosa Galvez

Hon. Rosa Galvez is a Senator of Canada. She is a member of the Standing Senate Committees on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources, and on National Finance. She has led the introduction of the Climate-Aligned Finance Bill to help guide Canada’s financial sector in its transition to a net-zero economy. She speaks English, Spanish, French, and Italian.

4. Colombia MP Juan Carlos Lozada

Hon. Juan Carlos Lozada is a Member of the Chamber of Representatives of the Congress of the Republic of Colombia. He leads an inter-institutional response to deforestation, fossil fuel expansion and humanitarian rights degradation of the Colombian Amazon Region. He speaks English, Spanish, and French.

5. Tanzania MP Nusrat Hanje

Hon. Nusrat Shaaban Hanje is a Member of the Tanzania Parliament. She was elected as a Member of the Special Seats as Women Representative. She serves as a member of the Energy and Minerals Committee of the Parliament. She speaks English and Swahili.
